Cavity Walls

Cavity wall space are external building surfaces which incorporate an air gap which may be within the wall composition itself (for e. g. Hollow block walls) or between two solid wall space (or between two dividers possessing a narrow air space separating them). The other technique was widely used in houses constructed between 1932 to 1982. 

Practically all houses constructed after 1982 adopted the tooth cavity wall technique with or without the use of insulation.

Why do you need insulation in tooth cavity wall?

The wall tooth cavity maintains an air space which is a good insulation. (In fact it is around the best available conveniently and almost all other made insulation materials incorporates air bubbles or spaces in order to gain this advantage). Once the cavity width between the two walls go over a certain critical dimensions the air within the gap start moving about due to convection (convection currents) which start aiding heat transfer from the warmer to the cooler side rather than stopping it.

Porous insulation load will restrict the air movement within the tooth cavity providing optimized insulation quality.

How to learn whether your house has cavity surfaces

All houses built during the last 25 years are almost certain to have cavity walls. That is possible these may be insulated too. Properties built during the 60 years prior to that particular are also likely to have tooth cavity walls but may well not have any insulation.

A sure giveaway sign is the brick pattern of the exterior wall. In standard wall bricks are put in 3 patterns.

Of these only the stretcher relationship patterned brick walls will have a wall tooth cavity. A stretcher bond designed brick wall will have the bricks laid level on side and in a linear manner i. e. bricks laid end to get rid of.

Another tell story sign is the breadth of the total wall structure. Due to the designed cavity the width is within excess of the normal 300 mm width you would expect it to have.

It is always better to get an experienced person with proper tools to give advice on these matters. Normally they drill holes in the wall and accumulate data to learn the details of the air gap, efficiency material (if any), and the present condition of it.

Fibreglass or mineral wool with short strands
Cellulose loose fill or stabilized cellulose
Phenolic and other Artificial foam cavity board -(Used in new constructions only).
