If most likely song is in G mixolydian, you can use the G mixolydian level as a basis for writing your melody.

I am going to teach you an example of what I’m referring to in the key of G Aeolian. Let’s say the chords in our track are Dm – General motors – Am. In this case we can use the D Aeolian size to generate a melody on top of these chords. The Aeolian mode pertains back to the major scale, or Ionian setting with a flatted third, sixth and seventh records. So in relation to Ionian, it is:

Since our chords are in G Aeolian, we can use the notes of the D Aeolian mode to come up with songs over our chords.
